Vitraž Lexicon 10 –  Donato Dozzy

Be honest, bare and naked with Vitraz Q&A. The 10th episode is with unique and renowned DJ from Italy Donato Dozzy.

In this lexicon we will be real, bare, and naked. Famous people, followers, acquaintances. Without any differences. It seems that we are becoming increasingly estranged, so we want to do our part to bring us back together through basic human interaction. Through honesty, interests, and recommendations.

Many spend years together without asking the right questions and really get to know each other. Maybe you’ll read the answers you’re looking for, perhaps someone will be an inspiration, a surprise. Honesty is the most incredible luxury we can afford.

In this episode we hosted Donato Dozzy (Donato Scaramuzzi), renowned, unique and authentic guy (and DJ) from Italy.

There are not many people in electronic music who have remained themselves, and who have prioritized childish playing with creativity over trends and popular opinion. One of them is Donato Dozzy, a musical Robin Hood and a native Roman who dared to combine techno, trance, ambient and experimental music, deep. No matter how many genres we list, we will not be able to sublimate his music. Those who start playing music today for the sake of fame and money certainly cannot understand it.

His curiosity stemmed from childhood. His parents, who cultivated a love for classical music, paved the way for his desire to play the piano, and his older sisters had the same affinities as well. High marks for his musicality kept coming, without him caring about them.

The dimensions of electronic music were revealed to him by his talented schoolmate Gianluca Marciani, who captivated him with his electro interpretations of Herbie Hancock, Richard Bono, and Malcolm McLaren. Love was created, it was only necessary to find the right medium for it. He bought an Audiojap mixer, then a Technics turntable, and started spinning everything from Dimitri from Paris, Wham, Prince to Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone.

He was the part of Roman alternative scene (Brancaleone resident) and later he became an icon at monumental Panorama in Berlin. Everything else is history. Numerous collaborations, his influence on the new generations that were coming, songs that became eternal, globetrotting around the world that sometimes prevents him from enjoying the view of the sea in his house somewhere between Naples and Rome.

Your childhood dream, a trait you carried along into adulthood

To make pop music, but pop with quality, the one that I grew up with. I believe it is still possible.

Three qualities you value the most in others

Honesty first of all, and interests, so that means people who are not just self-focused, and passion.

Three qualities that repulse you the most

Ego refference, ego-reference , manipulation.

Unfulfilled dream

I don’t think I have one. I’ll try to make it all. I still dream.

Greatest individual success

I didn’t achieved it yet. It might be my music and the fact that I was good to people.

Which compliment would please you the most, in regards to yourself.

That I am a good person.

Favorite song (at the moment, all time…)

Uh. My favorite song ever…this is a difficult one. I love many songs, it is hard to pick just one. Let it be “Fade to Grey” by Visage.

Favorite book

“Follia” by Patrick McGrath. This one came immediately to my mind, it’s not because it is the best one I read, but because I read probably in the right moment. Sometimes it happens in art as well, even if it’s not best thing you’ve experienced, could best at the time. “The Trial” by Franz Kafka, that was a shock. Classic.

Scenario, scenery, ideal, that you dream about (description if needed)

I would love to travel less, and I will make it happen within a few years, and to focus on music writing and soundtracks, music production generally. More peace. I bought a house on the beach, made a studio hat faces a sea. Im not still enjoying it as I should. It’s between Naples and Rome, a little bit south to Naples, in a national park.

What do you fear the most?

What is going to happen to my synthesizers when I’m gone. I think when my day comes I will pick someone and pass him the torch.

What do people lack the most?

Care more about feelings, like nostalgia for exemple. People are almost afraid to feel now. What people are missing is connection with the the past, so they could proceed to future. If you dont know the past there are no future.

What do you lack the most?

Time to be with my girlfriend, go to the beach, taking holidays in general.

Most significant regret

I don’t have any.

Favorite movie

The original Star Wars, Mon Oncle by Jacques Tati, and The Party with Peter Sellers.

Three favorite spots from your favorite city (tip, recommendation, doesn’t have to be your hometown)

I will focus on few cities. It has to be Bari, where my family comes from. It’s a treasure, beautiful, special in a cultural way with great seaside. I would recommend the Tuscan countryside like San Gimignano, Sicily, Sardinia.

Three to five qualities that u find in opposite/same sex that take your breath away (description if necessary).

It all starts with black hair. That’s already a step ahead. I like some mixture of Mediterranean feel, but also with some Eastern touch. My girlfriend is half Filipino half Indian.

Describe yourself in one word

Curious.

Your message, favorite quote, moto

Study!

Three things without which happiness seems unattainable

Eat well, sleep well, shit well.
